Divergent is the first book of a trilogy (Allegiant and Insurgent) about a very dystopian society. In this world once a child reach a certain age they have to choose between 5 different factions:
Erudite, Abegnation, Amidy, Candor and Dauntless. The chosen faction will determine the rest of your life. Each faction has a specific trait, for example Dauntless is fearlessness and Erudite is intelligence and technology. Tris, a girl from Abegnation, chooses the Dauntless faction and navigates her way through the admittance trials which train her to be more fearless and dependent. I liked this book because it was a perfect blend of adventure and romance. I would rate this book 4 out of 5 because the plot was interesting but the writing style was plain. I would recommend this book to 12+ since there is inappropriate language and smoke violence.Divergent is the first book of a trilogy (Allegiant and Insurgent) about a very dystopian society. The Hunger Games Catching Fire is the sequel to the Hunger Games book. Katniss is recruited once again to fight in the hunger games with previous other victors. This book is riddled with political statements about their dystopian society. It is similar to the first book but it has new political obstacles and commentary. The arena of this Hunger Games also poses some new and dangerous adventures for Katniss and her allies. I liked this book because it gives a good balance between fighting, adventure, romance and political activism. I would rate this book 4 out of 5 since the beginning of the book is bland but it progresses into a more intriguing plotline. I would recommend this book to 12+ adventure/action readers since there is violence and gore. The Hunger Games Catching Fire is the sequel to the Hunger Games book. Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King is a work of fiction that’s about Bill Hodges, a retired police officer. He receives taunts from an unknown man on an anonymous messaging site, who he believes is the culprit of a deadly attack on civilians whose weapon of choice was a Mercedes-Benz. He tries to figure out who is communicating with him, but when he struggles with this, he asks his neighbor, Jerome Robinson, and a tech savvy woman he meets named Holly Gibney to help him out. They are put under the clock when they realize that the same perpetrator is planning another, much deadlier, attack on the city. I would give this book a 4.5/5 because it is very intriguing from start to finish, but the first half is a little slow. The end, however, gets your heart racing and blood pumping during the exhilarating climax of the book. I think this book is good for kids that like action/mystery novels and are 15+ because of gore and bad language, such as the n-word.Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King is a work of fiction that’s about Bill Hodges, a retired police officer. He enters his first year at wizarding school in Hogwarts with his friends getting into all sorts of trouble and adventures. This book is tailored toward a younger audience through some of the playful mysteries and is still entertaining to older readers with the dark, dangerous adventures. I liked this book because it is a childhood classic, intriguing with all the dangerous adventures leading up to a big standoff. I would rate this book a 4.5 out of 5 since sometimes the plot is unnecessarily slow. Cujo by Stephen King is a horror novel about a Saint Bernard named Cujo that gets rabies. The beginning of the book is slow as it largely focuses on the plotlines of multiple people around a small town while the rabies slowly takes over Cujo. Once the various events start to come together to make a cohesive story, Cujo’s insanity takes over. Cujo is described as a very large dog, making his fight with rabies and increasing violence suspenseful and thrilling to the reader as the story progresses. I would rate this book as a 4.5 out of 5 since the beginning of the book is very slow but it’s worth waiting for the climactic ending. Cujo is very gory and a scary book so I would recommend this book to 15+, the writing and vocabulary is also very mature.Cujo by Stephen King is a horror novel about a Saint Bernard named Cujo that gets rabies. The Hunger Games is a fictional book about a dystopian society. America is divided into 12 districts and each year, a young boy and girl from each district are chosen to fight to the death in a coliseum-like battle called the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is televised and seen as an entertainment to the richer districts and seen as a death sentence by the poorer districts. Katniss Everdeen, the main character, is chosen for the games and has to navigate the politics and logistics that it takes to survive the games. I personally loved this book because it is a perfect blend of political statements, dangerous adventures, and romance. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a beautiful story about a young girl, Scout Finch, navigating a racist and sexist world. Her father, an esteemed lawyer takes on a case of an innocent black man that was to be executed. Scout starts to see the subtle hate against her family grow for supporting a black man in a racist world. Also as the trial continues, Scout and her brother Jem have many adventures, some with strong sexist and racist undertones, teaching the reader how women and people of color are treated in those times. Other adventures are instead lighthearted and amusing. I would rate this book a 5 out of 5 since it stays interesting and lively while teaching the reader about very heavy and dark subjects. This book was an easy read because the author’s style allows the reader to follow the story easily and pick up on the specific nuances of the plot. I would recommend this book to 12+ readers interested in coming of age/fiction books since the book is easy to follow along but some of the vocabulary is too complex for younger readers and follows a young girl into adulthood. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a beautiful story about a young girl, Scout Finch, navigating a racist and sexist world. Lord of the Flies is an incredible work of fiction, opening with a group of children stranded on an island after a plane crash. Over the course of a couple weeks, they learn how to govern themselves without any adult supervision, but they soon realize that totalitarian rule is a goal for one of the boys fighting for leadership. The novel really puts into perspective how easily mankind can fall back into chaos after thousands of years of building a sustainable society. One thing I really like about this book is how the story builds slowly but still captivates the reader. Also, Lord of the Flies holds an important message for the readers who think that complete control over the people is an ethical way to govern society. I think this book is good for kids 15+ because it is written in a more mature English style which can be a little hard to interpret. It also has quite a bit of violence and gore.Lord of the Flies is an incredible work of fiction, opening with a group of children stranded on an island after a plane crash. Of Mice and Men is a book about the journey of two ranch workers Lennie and George. Lennie faces mental disabilities which makes their travels difficult, in fact during the time of the Dust Bowl many people were discriminated against because of their mental capacity, skin color, or gender. These discriminations are seen as George and Lennie meet people of color and women in their journey, hearing the stories of different minorities. As George and Lennie go looking for jobs as ranch workers, to fulfill their dream of living independently, Lennie gets them into many unexpected troubles that they have to fix along the way. This book was good because the messages are still relevant today since making a living as a person with mentally disabilities is made harder by society. Although it explores heavy issues, Of Mice and Men is still lighthearted. I’d give this book a 5 out of 5 stars, because it captures the problems of many minorities in the working class and still portrays a beautiful plotline. The age group for this book is 12+ because the issues covered are mature but the vocabulary is not challenging so even younger readers will be able to read with ease.Of Mice and Men is a book about the journey of two ranch workers Lennie and George. The Shining is a book about a family of three caretaking an isolated hotel with a gruesome past during the winter. Jack, the father of the family uses the isolation as time to work on his novel while Wendy, his wife, and Danny, his kid, explore the hotel. Danny realizes he has a gift to be able to see the past horrors of the hotel as they reach out to him. The gift, called the Shining, allows him to communicate and interact with the many long past visitors of the hotel. As Danny explores this power, his father starts to get influenced by the hotel's mysterious ways. This book explores the working of the human mind, it allows for suspense and thrill as the reader progresses through the book and sees the influence of isolation on the Torrance family. I would give this book a 5 out of 5, it is intense and gory but still finds subtle ways to engage the reader. The plotline can feel slow at times but is worth the wait since the slow speed of the book all adds to the suspense the author intended. The age I’d recommend this book to is 16+ because the vocabulary and writing style is very mature, making it more difficult for younger readers to understand. The Shining also does not shy away from gore. The Shining is a book about a family of three caretaking an isolated hotel with a gruesome past during the winter.
