I greatly enjoyed this book. It was a wonderful insight into life for the lower classes in Belle Epoque Paris. I have always admired the work of Edgar Degas, a brilliant artist but a man flawed with prejudice. I had no idea that many of his most famous pieces, especially his famous bronze, " Little Dancer of Fourteen Years" , as well as "Dancer Resting" and "Dancer with a Fan" were based on an actual young dancer in the Paris Opera Ballet school named Marie Van Goethem.
Cathy Marie Buchanan does a wonderful job of embellishing the details of the life of Marie and her sisters and their struggles with poverty, a dead father and a mother addicted to Absinthe, the scourge of the working and artistic classes of Paris at the turn of the last century. She beautifully illustrates their work and their follies to rise above it all and become dancers or simply to find love.
The author gives great detail about ballet technique and the incredible dedication it takes to become a dancer. It can be a bit of a heartbreaker, but well worth the read.I greatly enjoyed this book. The best parts of LENNONYC were the little snippets of John just being the funny, articulate, weird and brilliant icon we grew up adoring. Also enjoyable were the interviews with the producer and musicians he worked with in the years and months before his death.
The film was obviously tightly controlled by Yoko Ono and so has a feel of censorship to it. It seems to be the story of Yoko Ono and her husband John and their life in the 70's and the brief period in 1980 before and after John's death. Yoko's narcissism is palpable.
It's an interesting resource if used as one fraction of the spectrum of Lennon's life. If you're really interested in John Lennon read what his son Julian has to say, May Pang's memories of her time with him ( some nice little interviews with Pang in the film though) and as many other diverse sources as you can find.
The interviews with Yoko are cringe provoking. It is not possible to respect someone who removed the Lennon name from their record label within weeks of his death (later restored) or someone who profits from images of John's glasses covered in his blood from the night of his murder. Who does that? My anti-Yoko bias obviously coloured my perspective of this documentary.
Often annoying, the film is still interesting as a narrow view of a flawed genius and loveable rogue. The best parts of LENNONYC were the little snippets of John just being the funny, articulate, weird and brilliant icon we grew up adoring. Desmond Tutu's non-denominational, multi-cultural children's book is a thing of beauty. It begins, 'Dear Child of God, what do you dream about in your loveliest dreams?' He talks about goodness, sharing, helping one another and free will. Anger and sadness are discussed as well, and the simple ways in which we can help each other overcome them. My sister is a kindergarten teacher of many years experience. She has noticed, after reading this beautiful book to her class, that if there should be a disruption or squabble amongst the children, at recess or at indoor play, some of the children will take it upon themselves to speak to the ones involved . They might say something as simple as, " We think you don't know about God's dream...." The beautiful illustrations are by LeUyen Pham. A must read for anyone interested in a gentle lesson in ethics and understanding of the human condition.Desmond Tutu's non-denominational, multi-cultural children's book is a thing of beauty. The Recess Queen is a really wonderful picture book . It tells the story of, ' mean Jean, The Recess Queen' and how all the other children in her class are afraid of her bullying behaviour. Along comes Katie-Sue, a new student and everything changes, for the better. My sister is a Kindergarten teacher. She reads this book to her class. Even the most hardened four or five year olds will stop and listen and learn. If someone is misbehaving and my sister should ask them. " Are you lollapolooshing?" , they immediately stop and change their behaviour without another word. The story seems to really resonate with everyone; the bullies and the bullied alike. Please give it a read. The Recess Queen is a really wonderful picture book .
