I have a large, green imp on my shoulder. Is it a demon from the Ether? some people might call it that..... Unfortunately it is not though. It's a rather large case of jealousy.

Jealousy and anger that is.

Jealousy that Fletcher got to live in this world and anger that I cannot because let's face is... it's fiction. But that's besides the point.

I have fallen in love with Matharu's writing lately. At first I was skeptical and thought that the book needed to progress and that Matharu should leave out some details ..... Then towards the end I thought that it was moving too quickly and he was skipping over details that would have been helpful. In the end though, it wrapped up into a nice fancy package that had me wanting to live in the realm.

I really wanted to rip Rook's throat out! But I believe that was the point of his character. He didn't quite get his butt kicked as I hoped he would but there is still more series to look hopeful to!

"What was it with people and trying to strangle him?"
...... Fletcher did have a rather tough time with people trying to hurt and/or kill him. It's a bit annoying that he had to escape town because he was defending himself against a psycho brat that didn't get what he wanted.

"Fight dirty, go for the face. Gentlemen's rules are for gentlemen." Rotherham muttered.

I rather liked Rotherham! I do so hope that we see more of him as the series continues. He was a blimp in the timeline but he was a significant one I do believe.

The one thing that absolutely frustrated me about this book was the ending. Like he didn't even make it to the ceremony.... BUT I understand the suspense in the end and immediately picked up the next book and started reading.

Again, I started on of Taran Matharu's books going "eh, it's okay." And ending said booking going "omg, that's awesome ... I need the next one"

This book was an awfully refreshing read. It is certainly up there with my most beloved series. The aforementioned book has good exposition, action, pacing, beautiful writing, and a beautiful universe. Taran Matharu has created a remarkably compelling universe and story that had me continually wanting more. The characters were very three dimensional and had good story arcs, that haven't yet finished as this is a series of books. What story arcs were developed in this book set up for an exciting series. The antagonists are powerful, everywhere, and filled to the brim with their own personality, or mystery. This book has a really good structure, continuity, it is very engaging, and action packed as well. I don't really have any problems with this book other than it can be frustrating at points, but the good kind of frustrating. It makes you feel frustrated for the protagonist and at the insurmountable odds/situations he is put in. Not frustrated at him or the story for doing something stupid or finding loopholes in the story’s universe. Based on the former I would rate this book an easy 5/5. I would recommend this book for any older than 12 as some of the concepts are political and complex at times and there is some gore, but not much. I believe that adults can enjoy this book too. @HagridsBucket of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

The Novice by Taran Matharu Is a really cool book, I rate it a 4 out of 5 for it`s adventure and story. This book is about Fletcher, an apprenticed, blacksmith orphan, with no last name. After a freak accident and meeting a grizzled veteran, Fletcher's life is turned upside down. With the help of Ignatius his pet demon and ragtag group of friends, he has to figure out the secret hidden from the empire. I think this book is meant for readers 13 to 16 because of violence and advanced vocabulary, this book is a must read. @thelastboyreviewer of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

Hard to put down

this book simply put is one of the best books i have ever read. The Novice has a great plot, and Taran Matharu has made a magical and fanatical world like no other fantasy novel I read. the depth and complexity of the life of Fletcher Wulf and the war against Homminium only increases through the next 2 books and the prequel. I am a huge fan of all types of books; from To kill a Mockingbird too the Percy Jackson series (both are very good books) and this is one of my favorite books.

Young Fletcher has no idea what adventures, and destiny, are in store for him! Exciting plot with wonderful characterization, friendship, loyalty, acceptance and strength.

This tale is simply too derivative. It bleeds fantasy tropes (hunter orphaned protag, bully guards, finds mysterious pet in the woods gifted to him by an equally-mysterious old man in a tavern). But I can appreciate a good fantasy trope. It was when we got to the school and we were properly hit by the cluster of references that it got to be too much. Not every idea is going to be original, but the way you spin it makes the difference, and this played every reference straight as Colorado's borderlines. Eragon, Harry Potter, Pokemon (POKEMON, seriously!), Lord of the Rings, His Dark Materials...but all played perfectly, perfectly, perfectly straight. Diamond-tipped rulers couldn't have gotten that any stiffer. The characters are nothing more than parodies. The world building, which had seemed so promising early on, is tossed away or muscled into the plot in bad exposition. All in all, it's bland and bleary.

Pretty good book. Makes me want to read the second one, but overall, for me, it could have even MORE and it would have been even better. Putting that aside, it's a great book! An imaginitive plot line and likeable characters! Definitely worth reading

A real pageturner YA fantasy adventure. The first in the trilogy, I would highly recommend to teens who enjoy Harry Potter, Fellowship of the Rings, Terry Brook's Shanarra series, Ranger's Apprentice series, etc.

The first book in a trilogy, "The Novice" is an awesome example of high fantasy. Elves, dwarves, humans, and orcs all play a role in a world where humans rule supreme, but are caught in a war with the orcs. Those who receive Summoning Scrolls have the power to summon a demon to fight at their side. These demons differ in appearance and power, ranging mostly from all kinds of interesting mythical beings. War, battles, romance, and loss... this trilogy made me cry, it shocked me, it made me cheer, and it made me angry. Its hard to not recommend a book that makes you feel so many things.

Absolutely amazing book! A real page turner, and I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't care if there is a love interest. All in all, an amazing book, can't wait for the sequel.

Absolutely loved this book! I could not put it down!
The author created his very own world that pulls you in. He added enough detail to give you a picture but, not so much that it was boring.
One word. WOW!

I found this book enjoyable and the plot engaging. It has a similar feel to many medieval fantasy fiction stories that I have read - so if you like those then you will like this. My only complaint is that I now have to wait for the next book to come out.
