"Mary Louisa Black was a plucky woman who, determined to improve her life and that of her husband and family, set out for the long trek to the Oregon Country. It was 1865. The route the wagon train, to which they attatched themselves, traveled was a little out of the ordinary. They followed the old Council Bluffs Road, sections of the Oregon Trail, a length of the Overland Trail, they climbed the shoulder of Mt. Hood on the Barlow Road in Oregon. Their destination was near the present city of Shady Cove in Southern Oregon's Rogue River Valley, thus they still had another tiring 300 miles to go after the train disbanded near Oregon City. Mary Louisa was sick most of the way yet she did her very best to shoulder her responsibilities which, at times, included driving the horse-drawn wagon. She was a determined, trail-wise woman at 30." -- Back cover.
