A fun, light-hearted, and somewhat trippy read. I love how you just fall into Alice's vivid dreams of unusual characters and crazy exotic worlds. Fun and brilliant.

Having never read the Alice books but seen so many screen adaptations this was a very interesting read for me. I see this as one of the first books published for kids but with an underlying complexity to make it enjoyable for adults as well. Martin Gardner's annotations bring the history and intricacies to life creating a very rich experience and introduction into the Carrollian world. It's well laid out though there are some times when the footnotes exceed the story and some page flipping is involved but it's minimal and completely worthwhile. Also, the inclusion of Tenniel's detailed illustrations completes the presentation though I wish they could have been a bit larger for a closer inspection.

Alice bears many readings, with always a surprise awaiting the next perusal. How this creation works as a book with appeal both to children and to adults is a marvel.

Why does it have to be ANNOTATED?!! I can't find the original book!

Looking for a French or German translation of the poem Jabberwocky? Need to know how many of John Tenniel''s illustrations are caricatures of real people? Wondering who the real Alice was? Look no further: Martin Gardner''s THE ANNOTATED ALICE (definitive edition) will answer any and every question you could have on Lewis Carroll''s ALICE IN WONDERLAND and ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. This beautiful edition includes the full text of both books, plus all of the original Tenniel illustrations. Extensive footnotes augment and explain the pictures and text, to a dizzying level of detail. A must-read for any fan of the Alice books.
