An account of one man's search for the truth behind an inexplicable death. For more than a century, the small town of Haddan, Massachusetts, has been divided, as if by a line drawn down the center of Main Street, separating those born and bred in the village from those who attend the prestigious Haddan School. But one October night the two worlds are thrust together due to an inexplicable death, and the town's divided history is revealed in all its complexity. The lives of everyone involved are unraveled: from Carlin Leander, the fifteen-year-old girl who is as loyal as she is proud, to Betsy Chase, a woman running from her own destiny; from August Pierce, a boy who unexpectedly finds courage in his darkest hour, to Abel Grey, the police officer who refuses to let unspeakable actions--both past and present--slide by without notice.

If you enjoy the lyrical writing and mystical connection to nature in Hoffman's books, I recommend The Poet's Secret by Kenneth Zak. He writes with the same beautiful prose and immerses the reader into his story's beautiful setting. His poetry at the beginning of each chapter is incredible, also.

Once again the master of magical realism has written a lyrical, alluring and highly suspenseful novel. A private school in a small town in Massachusetts is the setting for a story of love, murder and the scent of roses so strong it makes young girls faint.

Rated a NY Times Bestseller - reminds me that being a best seller doesn't guarantee quality writing. The narration would shift mid-paragraph as would tenses making it hard to follow in some places. The plot was OK, but predictable and sad from start to finish - great coverage of bullying though if you're a parent or teacher.
