Returning the Wild to Yellowstone

The release of Canadian gray wolves in 1995 and 1996 sparked a new-found passion for these animals and the unbound lands that sustain them. This work describes the journey of the wolves themselves and the people who faithfully followed them through the wilds of Yellowstone. It also includes details about the lives of these animals.

Fascinating book on the introduction of wolves to Yellowstone Park authored by one of the wildlife biologists involved. Yellowstone is the one place in the US where you are almost guaranteed to see a wolf in the wild. The book is at its best when Smith is recounting the stories of many of the animals that were brought in from Canada in the two initial releases. I wish there were a sequel, since the lifespan of wolves in the wild is typically less than 4 years (although some Yellowstone wolves have lived twice that long), and it would be wonderful to know what has become of the more recent animals.
