Generally speaking, god turns your brain to mush; you begin to believe in talking snakes in the Garden of Eden and other such abnormalities. Eventually, people convince you to give them all your worldly possessions, much the same way the Catholic Church convinced young wealthy males to renounce marriage when they joined the priesthood so the Church would take possession of their worldly goods, and the way various modern day cults practise the same measures.
