Comfort book.
Heartened that people online wanted series to be given Hollywood network treatment.
Good luck on locking actors to long term contract!

Imagine wandering into your favorite fantastical inn after a long, weary day of traveling and ordering up a warm bowl of porridge or stew in a bread bowl. Imagine eating that stew gratefully, reminiscing over your days spent hoofing it. This book is that stew; warm, welcome, nourishing. Nothing about this book is new, per se; it follows tried and true fantasy tropes, has recognizable characters and settings, and unlike popular fantasy today, it subverts-- twists--nothing. But the thing about this book is sometimes you just need that nostalgia, sometimes you just need a warm bowl of stew after a long day of adventuring.

I re-read this book every year, along with the rest of the series, the sequel series, and the two prequels. This book was the first adult epic fantasy novel I ever read. It started it all. I loved the tone of the characters, and the world Eddings created. I also loved how he purposely broke as many tropes in epic fantasy as he could, in a humorous and entertaining fashion. I highly recommend this book and the subsequent series to others.

The only caution I would say is that the first book does take its time in telling the story. If you prefer instant action or stories that go at a break-neck pace, you may want to give this one a miss.

This was the first Fantasy Series that I really got into. I went through the whole series twice reading and now once on audio in the last twenty years. I'll probrably end up reading it agian.

Easily one of the best fantasy series ever conceived. While the main concept of this saga isn't new, the characters are refreshingly likable and believable.

This book has it all: amazing and realistic characters, magic, politics, and a slightly dumb lovable character. The characters are really what take this story beyond the cliché template (which is still there, by the way) and actually transports you into a world that has been masterfully done, and has a political aspect as well. This book could be read by older kids and not have them think it was boring or crossed a line. I enjoyed this book enormously and would recommend it to fantasy lovers of all ages.

Great series of books

After some time absorbing the daunting mythology of the seven gods and the Orb of Aldur, I found that the story moves along swiftly once the journey began and events are set in motion. It's a promising start and I look forward to spending more time in this world.

"...But there's a world beyond what we can see and touch, and that world lives by its own laws. What may be impossible in this very ordinary world is very possible there, and sometimes the boundaries between the two worlds disappear, and then who can say what's possible and impossible?"
