"In the winter of 1917, nineteen-year-old Martha Lessen saddles her horses and heads for a remote county in eastern Oregon, looking for work 'gentling' wild horses. She chances on a rancher, George Bliss, who is willing to hire her on. Many of his regular hands are off fighting the war, and he glimpses, beneath her showy rodeo garb, a shy but strong-willed girl with a serious knowledge of horses. So begins the irresistible tale of a young but determined woman trying to make a go of it in a man's world. Over the course of several long, hard winter months, many of the townsfolk witness Martha talking in low, sweet tones to horses believed beyond repair--and getting miraculous, almost immediate results. Ultimately, her gifts will earn her a place of respect in the community"--Container.

It was ok, a gentle story of the era & place. I don't doubt much of it is factual, for many women filled in jobs for the men that were gone to war. Women raised in isolated areas of western US were treated similar to their brothers - all hands were needed. EDITED: finishing this read I had a very different take on it. Poverty & daily struggle regardless of the time period is relevant in this story. This writer has insight into the aging, maturing process. The feelings & deep-seated thoughts are often never articulated between people & only age, with the backward view, may bring enlightenment. The relationship between parent/child, for example, is beyond my description & limited space or ability, to explain. Guilt, remorse for comments & actions in our youth or inexperience will bite all in the butt eventually.
