When Elspeth Noblin dies of cancer, she leaves her London apartment to her twin nieces, Julia and Valentina. These two American girls never met their English aunt, their mother's twin sister. Julia and Valentina are semi-normal American teenagers -- with seemingly little interest in college, finding jobs, or anything outside their cozy home in the suburbs of Chicago, and with an abnormally intense attachment to one another. The girls move to Elspeth's flat, which borders Highgate Cemetery in London. They come to know the building's other residents. There is Martin, a brilliant and charming crossword puzzle setter suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder; Marjike, Martin's devoted but trapped wife; and Robert, Elspeth's elusive lover, a scholar of the cemetery. As the girls become embroiled in their neighbors' fraying lives, they also discover that much is still alive in Highgate, including -- perhaps -- their deceased aunt, who can't seem to leave life behind.-- From publisher description.

This book was promising: kooky twins, ghosts, an old cemetery, London. What could go wrong? Well......
The story starts out well, although a bit slow in action. Valentina and Julia, are pampered, spoiled twins who have never had to achieve anything for themselves. It's all given to them; there are no repercussions for not following through with plans, not having any plans, not doing anything significant, not planning for a future. They are 21-year olds destined to remain at home being treated like children for their entire lives. You just feel that something is going to happen to these twins to make them wake up and be a true part of life & the world. Good start, no?
But the story can't hold together. It's uneven and the decisions made by the characters are illogical. The characters themselves are uneven in their actions, thoughts and beliefs. Robert, Elspreth, Edie, Jack.....all illogical thinkers. Selfish, selfish people. Robert & Elspreth are particularly selfish as their actions/needs harmed another.

Very disappointing after enjoying her first book The Time Travelers Wife.
