I suggest to skip to the siege and read from there. Over on that other book review site, people are saying this was “easy to read”. I didn’t find it so [at the beginning].

To me, it seems the author hasn’t met a quote he won’t use. So, the narrative doesn’t flow smoothly or quickly because he’s trying to get that extra quote in. I was bored...until the siege and occupation...which is just the last few chapters. I’m reading all about the civil war, this is my 5th book and is the only one I've skipped thru.

What an interesting read about a little-known chapter in American history!
Spritely written and yet long-ranging in views. I realized when it was over that I had never really understood this man Sherman. Now, I felt that I understood - and liked - this reluctant warrior so much better.
I really enjoyed reading this book.
