Souls can be extracted and traded as commodities. An actor named Paul Giamatti agonizes over his interpretation of 'Uncle Vanya.' Paralyzed with anxiety, he stumbles upon a solution via a New Yorker article about a high-tech company promising to alleviate suffering by deep-freezing souls. Paul enlists their services, intending to reinstate his soul once he survives the performance. Complications ensue when a mysterious, soul-trafficking mule borrows Giamatti's stored soul for an ambitious, but unfortunately talentless, soap-opera actress. Now Paul is rendered soulless and is left with no choice but to follow the trail back to St. Petersburg.

Very promising and entertaining beginning, in a very similar vein to "Being John Malkovich", but then it slowly became a boring journey to tracking down his soul that was much less interesting (and hard to follow, or stay attentive to).

Twice, I've tried to watch this movie after reading reviews that praised it for being a smart, quirky film (a genre I love), but I simply was not able to get into this film. During this last attempt to watch it, I made it through an entire hour before finally giving up on it.

Open your minds people!! Why all the negative on this slightly quirky but interesting movie---I say it's above decent--And I like the cinematography and Russian ? Locations and the mood it creates--I liked it--

I don't usually make comments. However, tihs is one of my all time favorite movies, and it only has a rating of 2 1/2. I am hoping my 5 star will boost that a bit. I LOVE this film. Paul Giamatti is brilliant. The story is origional, well written, and well directed.

Big waste of time

Cute and original idea,.. but only one idea , and not worth 90 minutes . Gets tedious in its absurdity. And the value of a soul is equated only with the creative fame and $ucce$$ that it produces (?). [ NOTE.. the NYPL uses a 5 star rating system.]

Cold Souls was pretty interesting. This is definitely not a comedy despite the marketing. I would compare it to movies like Being John Malkovich or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Paul Giamatti is such a genuine and committed actor and I love how he never overacts the way some are prone to do. The Russian mule character was actually the most riveting in the movie. I loved her passive yet expressive face.

This is a poor man's "Being John Malkovich". I couldn't make it through the entire film which is rare for me. It is just trying too hard. Like a bad date. I had to walk away. Paul G. is a great actor though. Check him out in American Splendor where he plays my hero Harvey Pekar. Now that's a great film.

An intriguing idea didn't quite evolve into an interesting movie. Paul Giamatti, with all due respect, lacked the much-needed charisma for his character to be likable. I kept wondering if Will Ferrell or Bill Murray might do a better job.
Skip it. For outlandish film, my humble suggestion would be "Stranger Than Fiction".
