Beautiful and luminous. Absolutely mesmerizing.

This is beauty. Sheer, ethereal, shimmering, beauty. The mystical strain of Eastern Orthodox Christianity provides this timeless music – timeless, literally – many of these pieces not only “feel” ancient but appear to be without meter and simply float over the listener like blessings from angels. A capella liturgical music is familiar from Gregorian chant and from the Renaissance (Palestrina, etc.), of course. The music on this CD is part of a “renaissance of a renaissance”, a resurrection of the old styles but with some modern touches in the harmonic structure (other proponents of this second renaissance, all from the Eastern church, include Arvo Pärt and John Tavener). The pieces themselves, though often short, sound vast (particularly when recorded in the cavernous resonances of the 11th-century monastery in Kiev), and form parts of a much larger whole. Welcome in, to that larger whole.
