Frank Gallows has some explaining to do. The burned-out ghost wrangler has just sent an innocent child into the world of the dead. The kid's name is Garth Hale. In the regular world, he's just your average boy...who also happens to have a terminal illness. But Garth discovers that he has some quite extraordinary powers in Ghostopolis.

My guy is 7, he just recently ventured into graphic novels. He loved this book, he said his favorite part was Garth's friendship with the skeleton horse "Skinny". He begged me to let him take the book to bed so he could finish reading it. When he finished (about 9:30) he came to me to gush all the cool details. He asked if there was more or if this was the only one. Sadly I think it doesn't belong to a series.

It’s about a boy called Garth Hale who gets accidentally zapped into the ghost world by Frank Gallows, an agent for the Supernatural Immigration Task Force. Frank has messed up big time and gets fired from his job, but he promises Garth’s mum that he’ll find him in the ghost world and bring him home. Meanwhile, in the ghost world Garth makes friends with Skinny, a skeleton horse, and a ghost boy who just happens to be his grandpa. They meet all of the groups that inhabit Ghostopolis, including the Mummies, the Wisps, the Specters, the Zombies, the Boogeymen and the Bone People. Soon they’re on the run from Vaugner the evil ruler of Ghostopolis, who wants to use Garth’s newly discovered abilities to increase his control of the spirit world. Will Garth find a way home and will Frank Gallows keep his promise? Find out in Ghostopolis.

Ghostopolis is a spooky, adventure-filled story with plenty of laughs thrown in. I really liked Doug TenNapel’s style of illustration because it’s colourful and the panels are not overcrowded with detail. I particularly like how Doug has presented his characters (Frank Gallows looks worried alot of the time, Vaugner just looks plain evil with his blank eyes and spiky hair, and Garth just looks like an ordinary kid). If you like graphic novels like Tintin, Asterix or The Rainbow Orchid and want something a little different, you’ll love Ghostopolis.

Ghostopolis is about a young boy named Garth Hale who is accidentally transported to the afterlife by a ghost hunter named Frank Gallows. While in the afterlife, Garth meets his grandfather's ghost, and the two set out to find a way to get Garth a way back home while Frank teams up with his ex-girlfriend Claire to find Garth and get him back. The world that the author created is really creative in some places. The afterlife is made up of different kingdoms and is ruled by the evil Vaughner. This means that there a lot of different and uniques settings in the book like the Bone Kingdom, Mummyville and Ghostopolis for example. Each of these places have their own look and colours. The story has a light and fun tone which is perfect for kids but not too light for adults. Most of the characters have fun personalities and the book is pretty funny, even though some of the jokes are for a younger audience. However there is a funny joke about Benedict Arnold, who is a ghost in the afterlife, and keeps betraying everyone he works with. Even though most of the character have unique personalities, I thought that the villain, Vaughner, was actually a pretty boring character. All we know about him is that he got sent to the Afterlife by accident and that he was once in a relationship with Claire. Other than that he is just a bad guy that wants to rule the word and have power. There's a good amount of action in the book, but not too much since there's still parts where the book focuses on the characters. Garth finds out that in the afterlife, he has special powers which make the action scenes more exciting and cool to watch, especially the end fight. The artwork is a simple, comic strip type of artwork that perfectly fits the tone and feel the author was going for. Everything is stylized and the colouring and shading is good too, which makes the artwork look really great in some pages.

Very creative! Fast paced, and full of fun characters, Ghostopolis is the graphic novel at its finest. At its heart it is a discussion on the things you should fight for, justice, love and life. The style of drawing takes some getting used to, but ends up working well within the setting of the underworld.
