The enigmatic performer known as the Body Artist takes the stage at Chicago's Club Gouge and allows her audience to use her naked body as a canvas for their impromptu illustrations. The evening takes a strange turn when one woman's sketch triggers a violent outburst from a man at a nearby table. Quickly subdued, the man, an Iraqi war vet, leaves the club. Days later, the woman is shot outside the club. She dies in V.I. Warshawski's arms, and the police move quickly to arrest the angry vet.

I usually really like female detectives and this one started out great but then snowballed into something else. There was so much needless extras in this book that it was frustrating, like how she was always 'collecting' her dogs from the neighbours. You just want the story to progress and the main character is stalling by taking the dogs out, feeding them, etc. Additionally, the characters that either ask for her help (Petra) or don't want it (Karen and Clara's parents) are so unbelievable. So angry, petulant and needy that you just want her to give up on them. (Especially, since she's not getting paid for most of her investigation.) There are also long drawn out sections of 'could be' hypothetical rants that are completely off base. I really just wanted her to investigate and get "Just the facts, Ma'am." But instead she'd rather hang out and pull guess' out of thin air. Lastly, I'm not such a huge fan of the in your face feminist struggle detailed in the book. You can show female equality, feminist or humanist issues and address ongoing patriarchy within the story without having the characters painfully lecture each other. I may read another V.I. Warshawski book in the future because it is hard to find a great female private eyes but overall I'm going to continue looking for someone else to fill that role.
