The diary as Anne Frank wrote it. At last, in a new translation, this definitive edition contains entries about Anne's burgeoning sexuality and confrontations with her mother that were cut from previous editions. I listened to this as an audiobook as read by Selma Blair and enjoyed it immensely. It really captured my attention. The insight it provided into this historic time was great. It was also refreshing to experience the writing of a young girl in her own words.

Unexpurgated version. Quarrelsome, self-absorbed teen diarist criticizes her family and other companions in hiding. She is so much wiser than the adults. Everyone has failed her. Endless complaining.
The diary has become a quasi-religious text for many people. Anne's plight was tragic, but her diary, in this uncut version, is not very edifying. Viewed objectively, it amounts to an extended tirade against her mother, sister, and everyone else at one time or another. She could have made her mother feel appreciated in her last months of life, but instead did the opposite.
