Cartography *is* an art, and the conjuration here of faraway islands (all depicted at the same scale) with line and dot is quietly evocative for the armchair traveler. Each entry is accompanied with lyrical prose that tends to underscore the ungraspability of these lands even as their physical dimensions are precisely captured.

I've read this amazing book twice, and was completely mesmerized both times. The stories are fascinating and nearly poetic, the maps are exceptionally well-drawn and engaging, and like most fine desserts, you want to nibble at it, but end up gobbling the whole thing down in one sitting!

For the traveller who likes reading & dreaming more than leaving your armchair, this quirky book is great. The author introduces you to fifty remote islands from all parts of the world. Schalansky has gathered interesting history & natural history for all places, and the maps are beautiful.
