Like "Dreams Made Flesh", the other group of short stories, this group of four short stories adds to the mystery and myth of the Black Jewels universe. Some of the questions answered are "What can scare the crap out of Lucivar?", "What can turn a Black jeweled Warlord Prince green with nausea?" and "How long did Saetan have Daemon and Lucivar before the paternity was denied?" The answer to that last question is "Around fifteen years." How I got that number is Daemon got his second wife pregnant, married her, and fifteen years later the little girl goes through her birthright ceremony and her mother grants paternity. By the way, Daemon's second wife was approved of by Witch, because Daemon needed a wife that could fully understand him, and few from Kaeleer could handle knowing the Sadist. But she could, though it did startle her to wake up with the Sadist in bed the first time.

This group of stories about the realm of the Black Jewels novels has two stories set between "Tangled Webs" and "The Shadow Queen". One of those stories deals with how Tersa adopted her 'winged boy' and how the family plans to celebrate Winsol in the coming years, with the boys spending time with their mother and Jaenelle spending time with her 'papa'. The second story is about Surreal and Ranier's time at Ebon Rih, and Falonar getting some very sharp lessons in warriors to fear and aristo families to be very wary of. Chaosti's reaction to treachery is something to behold.
The next two stories take place in near and far futures. One deals with Sylvia and her marriage to Saetan, which makes her the stepmother of Lucivar and Daemon, and gives Daemon control over her Baron and Mikal who are still alive, even though Sylvia is not. The last story is about that time that Surreal refers to in "Shalador's Lady" when the hourglass in Daemon's head runs out, and the very special healing web that Jaenelle entrusts to the spinners activates. Daemon does finally heal from having his heart ripped out and his daughter by his second wife is going to be a real handful, especially since The Song In The Darkness is insuring that the little girl has all sorts of furry companions that are all descended from Jaenelle's furry friends.

"Surreal?"
"Hmmm?"
You know that small table in the sitting room that you're so fond of?"
"Uh-huh."
"It now has a vase in it."
"You mean on it."
No, in it."
"There isn't one of them old enough or with sufficient training to try to pass one object through another. They shouldn't be---. If I have to deal with this tonight when I'm on the shaky side of sober, YOU have to answer the next sex question."----Daemon and Surreal
