This is a great story. It is the best book I've read this year. It is a special tale of family, community, and forgiveness. I love the setting (Upper Peninsula of Michigan) and I love the characters Airgood has created. She makes the people seem like people you have known for years. They simply are themselves and live within their past and limitations. The determination of the men and women to do their best despite heavy odds against them is remarkably laid out before the reader. I cannot believe this is a debut novel, but it is. I'll certainly look forward to the next one by her.

There were a few places in this debut novel where I had to suspend my disbelief and just soldier on. In the end, I'm glad I did; several of the characters were finely drawn and quite memorable and there are a couple of sweet relationships that are subtly and touchingly written. Any Lake Superior lovers out there should find this well worthwhile for light summer reading.
