Considered by many to be the most terrifying writer in English, James's stories draw on the terrors of the everyday. Documents and objects unleash terrible forces, often in closed rooms and night-time settings where imagination runs riot.

This book took me a long time to read, because of the tiny old English wording!
But it was sooo good. It was very different to read short stories!

If you are used to reading Edwardian style english, this book is excellent. If not, the first story at least is nicely chilling. However the archaic language style is a huge detractor to the stories, as it is a barrier to slog through until you are used to it. Usually I make an effort with each book, but with only a two week loan period, there wasnt the time nor the motivation.
