On the whole, this biography is for scholars and musicologists who are not afraid to get lost amidst its dense analysis and complicated writing. However, Chapter #24 (entitled “Fearful Symmetries”) made it worth reading for me. In this chapter, Solomon examines why Mozart’s music is so beautiful and timeless. It puts into words how I felt when I first began to discover Mozart’s music, when I would be stopped in my tracks by a passage or entire piece of his music. It touches something deep within us, this beauty which is a mixture of sadness, transience, loss, desire and hope.
