"Hammer accompanies a conservative politician to Moscow on a fact-finding mission. Arrested and imprisoned by the KGB on a bogus charge; he quickly escapes, creating an international incident by getting into a fire fight with Russian agents. On his stateside return, the government is none too happy with Hammer. Russia is insisting upon his return to stand charges, and various government agencies are following him. A question dogs our hero: why him? Why does Russia want him back, and why was he singled out to accompany the senator to Russia in the first place?"

I respectfully disagree. Book finally explained where Velda been in 7 year gap & why she tolerated Mike's sexual shenanigans. Mike Hammer had more empathy than James Bond after she opened up. Sure, I was griped on nuggets on how Mike Hammer escaped from Soviet Union manhunt over several countries with usual body count on first half thriller. The second half mystery on why he was natural second choice bodyguard to Republican Senator was brilliant.
Cold pragmatic Intelligence bureaucrat Art Rickerby made nice contrast to heart on his sleeve Mike Hammer.

Mickey Spillane was very, very popular when it came to pulp fiction. Mike Hammer is a name most mature Americans know. This novel co-wrote by another popular writer, Max Allan Collins, is just the biggest drag. By page 50 the only action was sex in a Moscow hotel room. I quit reading it.
