I must confess two things: I was eager to read this, and I found it disappointing. There is no lacy-soft intimacy and profound self-revelation (like Goethe), nor is there anything like reflections on the world and important events in it (like T. Mann's letters). Its mostly just chatter.

I'm a fan of many of Cather's novels. It was interesting to read some behind-the-scenes things, like how involved she got in the design of the book itself in the publishing process. All of the letters are written by Willa Cather, so it is a bit one-side, but the two people who selected the letters added comments, history and other information throughout, which helped a lot. I enjoyed seeing how she interacted with other writers and artists, her contemporaries, and those letters gave a fuller picture of her and her life. Well, all the letter did that actually. This is a big book and took quite a while to read. It's worth it though.
