Michele Simon is a nutrition policy attorney who has plenty to say about "Big Food", the huge corporations that run the franchise restaurants and manufacture some much of our food. She draws an somewhat convincing parallel between what has been happening with the food industry and what had occurred with Big Tobacco. She discusses the policies of companies like Kraft, PepsiCo, McDonald's, etc. It is an interesting and amusing book to read; Simon's anger about current industry practices translates into some rather blunt and sarcastic anecdotes. In the end I was not highly convinced of the correctness of her position. I agree with the corporations in that personal responsibility is the answer to a lot of our complaints about the food industry. The book is worth reading, and does give the reader plenty of food for thought.

Simon lays bare the truth of what the food industry is all about and the tactics employed by corporations to undermine our health, and it sure isn't pretty. From the "nutriwashing" of fast food and processed food to the marketing of junk to children, this book will get your blood boiling and inspire you to join in the fight against unscrupulous corporations.

The author presents the different strategies marketing firms and shareholder owned companies use to confuse and mislead consumers into making them think their products are healthier or healthier, when in fact they are junk. It is very interesting and well written, with plenty of examples of industry marketing strategies and a section on improving school lunch programs.
