Sure there is a cliched fight between chosen one & mad god.
The more interesting sub-plots were Bear Cult purge by two "simple minded" queens, Tolnedran "military observers", Tolnedran emperor ordered his middle aged general staff ragged on tower to see scaled model map on lawn on alliance marching progress, how the alliance army's logistical problems from foraging food to moving ship on land, mountain, land & on sea.
Ditto Belgarath helping other side nation get out their alliance, Polgara capture by other side to her refusal to submit to mad god after sensible blacksmith admirer sacrificed his life.
