Pretty much any book in the Hornblower series is a good read. Initially I thought it would be old, dry and dusty writing, with more than a bit of the useless wordiness that is sometimes found in older/classical writing. Not Hornblower! bit of a page-turner in fact.

I suppose one either enjoys the Hornblower stories or avoids them altogether. I've enjoyed all of them over the years and recently decided to re-read several of them. This tale of Hornblower's early days after first having been promoted from Midshipman is far from the best of the series but nevertheless quite entertaining. This is an adventure story, plain and simple, but one that's better written than the vast majority of books of that genre.
