for the record...anyone who truly follows foreign cinema understands that dubbed versions of foreign actors robs the viewer of some of the best acting moments in any cinema world.

I really, really liked this movie! One thing I can't understand is that, with all the great production value, special effects, and plot lines, why the producers couldn't cough-up another $70k / 90k to English-dub the dialogue. If they had, this could have been a great N. America commercial success (in the vein of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon").

Fun kung-fu action drama. Mark Chao as Detective Dee is charming and humorous. Feng Shaofeng as the driven Justice Dept. Chief Minister Yuchi has many aerial fighting scenes and brings a deadline urgency (he has to solve the case in 10 days or face execution) that Detective Dee lacks. Shantuo is a humorous sidekick doctor, perhaps suggesting a Dr. Watson to Detective Dee's Holmes.
The case is more incredible than the original Detective Dee & The Phantom Flame, but still enjoyable. It was nice to see the sea monster based on a different marine animal than usual.

Don't look for plot but not a disappointment because of the cinematography, the beautiful fight scenes and the Empress (who belongs in "Star Wars"...)

This DVD movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. Not too bad---good performance. Very predictable but still entertaining. I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.
