Living a life of luxury, Ripley attends a party thrown by Jonathan Trevanny and overhears the host making critical comments about Ripley's fashion sense. Enraged, Ripley immediately plots his retaliation. This comes via his former business partner Reeves. Reeves seeks out Ripley's help in finding an unrecognized assassin to kill a Russian gangster, and Ripley suggests he talk to Trevanny. Trevanny reluctantly accepts the offer and the situation quickly spirals out of control to the point of drawing the attention of the Russian mob, forcing Ripley to intervene.

A little disappointing - Ripley starts off as a bloody murderer but then ends up the movie as a good guy. I have not read Patricia Highsmith's book, but I enjoyed Matt Damon's Ripley, who is a more consistent psychopath. Malkovich is excellent, as always.

Implausible plot, tho fine acting from JM redeems it. What is truly annoying is the shoddy sound engineering. The dynamic level ranges from barely audible (conversations recorded in exterior venues) to wall-shaking musical and violence soundtracks. Prepare for constant volume adjusting on your remote.

“Ripley’s Game” is based upon the Patricia Highsmith’s novel by that name which she wrote many years after her successful “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” Highsmith’s mystery novels emphasize the protagonist’s neuroses, psychoses, sociopathic tendencies, not the deductive path of mystery novels written by other authors. Alain Delon (in “Purple Noon”), Matt Damon (“The Talented Mr. Ripley”) and Dennis Hopper (“The American Friend”) have all played Tom Ripley prior to this movie and now we have John Malkovich playing him again. Elsewhere, Malkovich’s portrayal is said to exhibit the finest example of Tom Ripley’s personality characteristic, “insouciance.” (Look it up, I had to and I agree.)

This is my favourite Malkovich movie, and although the other Ripley movie launched 4 careers (Hofmann, Damon, Law and Paltrow), I consider this a close second adaptation of part of Patricia Highsmith's series (see also the noir classic 'Strangers on a Train'). Although the psychological probing is somewhat richer in The Incredible Mr Ripley, thanks to Malkovich the level of malevolence is without parallel in this, as in few other films. Dougray Scott plays his part reasonably well, despite some palpable self-consciousness, to convey the deterioration of his health. Ray Winstone is under-utilized (catch him in Sexy Beast!), and instead of Lena Headley I might have preferred Rebekah Hall. In the Chiara Caselli role it would have been nice to have someone less anonymous. But it's the script that doesn't provide much for these secondary characters to go on, if the truth be told. Still, Malkovich is outstanding in this.
