"It is 1934 and the Depression is bearing down when sixteen-year-old Weldon Avery Holland happens upon infamous criminals Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow after one of their notorious armed robberies. A confrontation with the outlaws ends as Weldon puts a bullet through the rear window of Clyde's stolen automobile. Ten years later, Second Lieutenant Weldon Holland and his sergeant, Hershel Pine, escape certain death in the Battle of the Bulge and encounter a beautiful young woman named Rosita Lowenstein hiding in a deserted extermination camp. Eventually, Weldon and Rosita fall in love and marry and, with Hershel, return to Texas to seek their fortunes. There, they enter the domain of jackals known as the oil business. They meet Roy Wiseheart--a former Marine aviator haunted with guilt for deserting his squadron leader over the South Pacific--and Roy's wife Clara, a vicious anti-Semite who is determined to make Weldon and Rosita's life a nightmare. It will be the frontier justice upheld by Weldon's grandfather, Texas lawman Hackberry Holland, and the legendary antics of Bonnie and Clyde that shape Weldon's plans for saving his family from the evil forces that lurk in peacetime America and threaten to destroy them all" -- from author's web page.

This is my first ebook. I have a kindle and I can normally convert any format to MOBI using Calibre. This download format you use for books - .acsm - doesn't. Don't know what to do. I have the .acsm file downloaded but can't figure out what to do with it. Please get back to me on this? Thanks.

A refreshing change from CIA story plots, terrorism stories and fantasies. A much different pace from many great stories written by popular writers. I think some gave up on it too soon.
I remember years ago I read War and Peace: It took me a year to read the first 50 pages and a week to read the rest of it.
I enjoyed it completely especially Burke's wisdom that showed through the characters.

I have read many, many Burke books and this is the only one I haven't enjoyed. I need to find a character that I like in a book, and that was missing for me here. I didn't finish it....

Thus is my first read of Burke and I'm impressed. While the story felt meandering at times, the central character and his inner thoughts are compelling and help drive the plot forward. Look forward to reading other work by him.

This story left an effect on me, a story you will find hard to put down.

Burke has written a lot of readable books over the years, most of which don't have the scope or breadth of this one. I enjoyed it, read all the way through it, and respect the job he did with it. But I don't want to give it a standing ovation, just the standard, routine applause worthy of a nice read I don't regret spending the time reading.

I was barely able to put this novel down.
The characters were truly alive and traces of DNA from Heaven's Prisoners, The Carpetbaggers and Forrest Gump seem to course through their veins for better or worse. A life adventure with smackings of history and a mostly plausible plot make for a very absorbing read. Burke is a poet who can disguise is work as flowing prose.
One of the best I have read in a long time and possibly James Lee Burke's finest.

As many readers also do, I rate a book by the time I'm able to abstain from other duties to read it. Mr. Burke has always kept me reading . Despite a few minor flaws, this book has my highest admiration. He teaches us while entertaining us.
