"When the young William Wyeth leaves St. Louis for a fur-trapping expedition, he nearly loses his life and quickly discovers the depth of loyalty among the men who must depend on one another to survive. While convalescing, he falls in love with proud Alene, a young widow who may or may not wait for him. And on a wildly risky expedition into Crow territory, Wyeth finds himself unwittingly at the center of a deadly boundary dispute among Native American tribes, the British government, and American trapping brigades"--Jacket flap.

An enjoyable and exciting book about the fur trade and the remarkable men who ventured into the savage country. They found not only danger but the intoxicating aura of the west before it had been spoiled.

Belongs beside The Big Sky and Jeremiah Johnson in lists about mountain men and the era of the fur trade. It's a bit limited in scope but well written and fast paced. At times the reader might be led to feel his kangaroo self bouncing along hitting only the high spots, then stopping to graze a while. But it's a fun historical novel about an intriguing time written by fresh talent.

this book is so underrated. It's one of the two best books that I've read in a year. There's so much tension that occasionally I had to put it down. A terrific
Western novel!
