After seeking the Movie The Theory of Everything, I am glad to have read Jane Hawking's biography which fills the gaps of a complicated yet amazing life. As a young wife whose husband was given only two years to live, there is no way Jane could have predicted the highs and lows of living with a genius affected by neuron motor illness. Her very candid and honest account shows a woman brought to the brink of despair. Her faith and the support she gets from so many friends and family allow her to persevere. The love for her children and her husband are what keep her going. The unraveling of her marriage is a slap in the face but she does go on to make a new life for herself with Jonathan. I loved this book and read through the almost 500 pages quickly.

A great companion to the Theory of Everything movie, this exploration of the lives of Stephen Hawking and his family, from the perspective of his first wife, reinforces that what the official image projects differs widely from reality. This lengthy book (almost 500 pages) contains periodic extensions into physics principles, medieval history (Jane's thesis) and travel descriptions that are perhaps unnecessary and even distracting, but overall, the book is hard to put down.

Captivating story of Jane's struggle to maintain family life, personal goals and the ups and downs of a man who was not only her best friend and husband, but a genius.

Okay-maybe it's just me but I think all these people are way too full of themselves and self-absorbed. Stephen Hawking seems to think he's God's (well, okay-since he does not believe in God-SCIENCE'S) gift to mankind and by Jane's own account, she is some kind of long-suffering heroic victim of her and Stephen's situation. I guess I just pretty much think they're all sick in the head. So at the very end of the book we see that Stephen has divorced again (I assume the evil Elaine was finally cast aside) and they are now a happy family again, "about to go on a holiday together". So where is Mr. Jonathan in all this-is he going on this "holiday" too? I'm sure he'll really enjoy it! Or is he even still around? You know, these people may all be really, really science and book smart, but they act like idiots if you ask me.

If you want to know the reason why Stephen Hawking lived well past what was expected, you need look no further than Jane Hawking. This book is a rich meandering bittersweet account of her love, devotion, and selfless care of Stephen.

A very strong and devoted woman who dealt with a difficult personality. The movie is superbly cast and is must see. I hope it and they win at Oscars.

Jane Hawking’s life with Stephen through courtship, marriage, children and divorce. Compelling reading for everyone but especially for those caring for someone with motor neuron disease or any severe disability.
