Young boys at the beginning of these inter-related short stories, Bell and Harry, grow to adulthood, sharing their lives as country and London-based families. What are clear differences in their lives diminish as the London Bateman family spends more and more time in this rugged northern England landscape.
This book is listed with Gardam's writing for children, but it hardly seemed that to me. You could call them coming-of-age-stories as they are mostly from the boys’ point of view. Stories are very English, fun for me as I discovered the setting was near Westmorland where part of my husband’s family lived long, long ago.

Young adult fiction, set in Cumbria and painting a picture of country life. Quite charming.
