When three women living on the edge of the American frontier are driven mad by harsh pioneer life, the task of saving them falls to the pious, independent-minded Mary Bee Cuddy. Transporting the women by covered wagon to Iowa, she soon realizes just how daunting the journey will be, and employs a low-life drifter, George Briggs to join her.

Life on the American frontier in the 1850's was not for the faint of heart. When 3 women go insane as a result of the harsh pioneer life, Mary Bee Cuddy and George Briggs agree to take them back home to their families. Along the way, they encounter many dangers, from both nature and man.
A Western movie for people who don't like Westerns

****_It takes a special kind of person to see the beauty and honesty in this film. I felt uncomfortable watching it but knew that in truth much of it was a look at past pioneer reality. Beautify played and had lovely spiritual elements and self giving elements to take me on a soul searching journey of gratitude to those who helped to create our country .

One of the worst movies I have ever seen. How did they get Hillary Swank to play that stupid demeaning role? Dumb storyline, bitter ending. Hated it.

Long boring movie! A waste of over 2 hours of my life!

This was a very good movie that was actually difficult to watch at some points.
Told from a female perspective, it is sensitive, yet harsh and opens the eyes to some of the tough realities of the era.
Twists and turns and a couple of shocks makes this a refreshing film that is totally unpredictable.

Loved this movie. It's a quality production, with good acting and a really nice story. It's more drama than western, and is told through the female perspective. It takes a shocking and unexpected turn late that changes the narrative into something deeper. Very enjoyable.

The flashback scenes in the beginning are a bit confusing as the viewer tries to figure out the sequence and significance. It's gritty and plain spoken, and tells in vivid detail about the lives of three women whose minds no longer can deal with reality, and the man and woman tasked with their temporary care. A great western tale featuring Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank, but don't confuse this with your average western. It is heartbreakingly intense.

This is a tough film, and it's not your standard Western- the movie even discards the whole morality/ amorality questions and themes that arise in most Westerns. Tommy Lee Jones directs a stellar cast in an uncomfortable but ultimately rewarding film experience ( rewarding in the sense that you've seen something you haven't before ). I would recommend this film for those with a strong stomach.

This movie is a stripped-bare western - the setting is about as harsh as it gets for sodbusters, and life is equally harsh and unforgiving. The movie itself plods along and is both intriguing and minimalist in plot and execution. If you're looking for a shoot em up style duster, this isn't it for the most part. It's a character study of likely everyday men and women who went west in the 1800s in search of a dream and found little comfort in the realities of rural life.

I love Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank, and I thought the premise of this movie was interesting, but I found the flashback scenes of the mentally unstable women to be disturbing and unnecessary, and made the movie more akin to a horror movie whose goal is to shock. i stopped watching after the needle poking.

The only creative lines are disparaging remarks on the looks of the heroine:

Bob: Miss Cuddy. I appreciate the offer, the supper, the concert and all. But Icannot marry you, will not, won't. I ain't perfect but you are too bossy and too damn plain.
===
Mary: I will not sit still for profanity in my house.
George: I can see why you're single.
===
George to Mary: Thank you for the kind words, sister. You're no prize yourself. You're plain as an old tin pail and you're bossy.
