"Scent of Murder" was better than I expected. I've been on a binge of reading books with law enforcement dogs as main characters, so I recognize a continuum of quality among the books.

Here are a few characteristics the book *does not* have:
* It's not sappy or sentimental. Some moments are tense, to be sure, and some are introspective, but not stretched to the extremes of believability. (Lassie does not appear in the emotional spectrum. :-)

* The officer and the dog express their perspectives, and they seem authentic.

* It's no overly brutal or vicious. The violence fits the situations and the level of detail in the scenarios well-convey the emotion and action.

* The relationships between the handlers and their dogs is not portrayed as inter-species mysticism. Dialogue and behavior between the Master Trainer and the K-9 Team are realistic and based on best practices (both scientifically and ethically) of the real-life professionals.

A last comment: A quick read and engrossing....I enjoyed it!
