VERY GOOD 1942 Preston Sturges romantic screwball comedy with fine performance by Claudette Colbert and others. A bit whack trip into how money and romance do and don't mix.

1942's "The Palm Beach Story" ends on such a preposterous, asinine, and cringe-worthy note that this moment totally renders what happens in the story before as being utter garbage. It's true.

Written and directed by the apparently respected playwright, Preston Sturges - I'm completely convinced here that Sturges must have held his intended audience in absolute contempt to have foisted this putrid excrement on them.

Yes. I do know full-well that the Hays Code was in effect during this era in movie-making history - But, with that said - I swear that Hollywood must've had a really low opinion of the intelligence level of American adults back then to have offered them utter junk such as this, expecting them to lap-it-up and come running back for more (which, of course, they did).

Preston Sturges's comedy masterpiece. In 1942, romantic comedy was a dominant genre, and had become so confident of its appeal that it felt free to become nonsense: beautiful, sophisticated nonsense, as light and delicious as a glass of champagne. Who but a rube or a humorless grump wouldn't want to live in Sturges's sparkling New York, and to take a yacht, an airplane or a train (without the Ale and Quail Club) to his screwball Palm Beach?

Claudette Colbert is such a natural actor. It doesn't even feel like she is acting at all! And, Joel McCrea plays the part so stuffy but he is so endearing. This movie is full-out silly but an absolute pleasure to watch!

This version is part of the Criterion Collection. Their movies ARE subtitled, but they do not have a menu option to choose subtitles. If you turn on the subtitle function on your dvd player directly, the subtitles will appear.

Very disappointed there were no subtitles or closed captioning. I was unable to watch it.
