Worth seeing for several reasons: beautiful performance by Rosanna Arquette; example of early work by director John Sayles; fun soundtrack; period-60s-piece filmed in early 80s. But I think the first half—the high school half—is better than the later college half, which drags.

Its one of those "wow Ive never heard of or seen this 80s movie."

Thought that Rosanna Arquette did a rather convincing job as an awkward but precocious teenager and her transformation to a perceptive and stylish college student both in appearance and demeanor. A very honest movie about life and growing up, the contrast between dreams, ideals and reality; the uncertainties and caprices of being human.

Rosanna Arquette plays a Jewish high school girl in 1966 seeking entrance to an exclusive college and Vincent spano plays a handsome Italian high school student on the verge of dropping out. They form a romantic bond, but such a mismatch may just doom the possibility of a long-term connection. This is an early film for these two actors and is also very early in director John Sayles’ career. Lots of 50’s and 60’s R and B and Rock and Roll music in the background. This was during the period in which White kids first discovered and liked Black music. In another fifty years, White kids would not agree with their parents on the importance of the separation of the races.
