Women generally outlive men.
And while many struggle for years with poor health and even poorer resources..some,who are better off, write about it.
Joan Didion's Year of Magical Thinking..and then Joyce Carol Oates account of widowhood..and now this one.
Rehm's work is moving, and like the two previous writers ,her suffering is apparent.
Didion's loss was immediate. Her husband died from heart failure. Rehm's spouse suffered the ravages of Parkinson's,and begged ,but was refused help in ending his pain.
There are the implicit observations ,that a quick death is better for the one dying, but harder on those watching.
And conversely, a protracted disease like ALS,parkinsons or MS somehow allows the spouse to prepare.
The grief is essentially the same.
Didion is clearly the better writer, but Rehm's book left me with an ache.
Must reading for all married folk.
A remarkable, moving, wrenching, inspiring account. Read it. Thank you, Diane Rehm.
There is no basis in fact by the commentator below for the assertion that Diane Rehm is an "extreme rightwinger". I've listened to her show on NPR through satellite radio for many years. Rehm is a dispassionate and objective interview host and rarely if ever infects the discussion with her opinions. She's been questioned about using her show as a way to espouse her views on assisted suicide. In the fall, she enunciated quite clearly on one of her shows that she would remain dispassionate in any debates on her show about the topic.
Also, I fail to understand how assisted suicide is part of any extreme, right-wing agenda. Extreme right wing agendas espouse racism and other hurtful ideas that hurt society. Rehm is no such person.
It's a shame that you've used Rehm's book to promulgate your hatred of media. Her book is about assisted suicide and using this platform to promulgate your views about media have no place here. We didn't learn anything about your views of Rehm's book. Rather, we received a rant from you.
Probably, and unlike Zoe2000 of the Hamilton Public Library, I have performed thousands of hours of volunteer political activism and financial activism over my life, and one of those hours involved attending a lobbyist dinner [attended by President Nixon] under the guise of a conservative lobbyist pass we managed to somehow obtain for that evening. I happened to sit between Linda Chavez, most recently of the Manhattan Institute and formerly of the Reagan and Carter Administrations [she was denied an appointment by George W. Bush's administration by congress as it turned it she was paying her undocumented help below minimum wage] and Diane Rehm - - and the two of them had a marvelous time, discussing the real feelings of Lebanese-American conservative Diane Rehm, who gave endless amounts of time to Jonathan Kay in his propaganda spiels [he of no background, no facts nor sources, nor of any consequence] and has soundly rebuked and forbidden any liberal guest from ever calling out any conservative guest for outrageous lies [look it up and check your facts].
She's a fraud and a phony, just the same as the lobbyist for the central bankers, Paul Krugman is, just as the Chomskys are, just as Brad O'Leary is and his relative, and the one Mockingbird Program person named by former CIA Director Colby, Jerry [Jeremiah] O'Leary was.
Remember, Anderson Cooper interned at the CIA during his summers at Yale, the Alsop brothers were cousins to Kermit and Archibald Roosevelt at the CIA [and their primary sources] and Lewis Lapham's [Harpers] brother was chief counsel at the CIA, Cleveland Amory's brother was deputy director at the CIA, Tom Braden postured as a liberal for his career, yet was an extreme conservative - - he was the special assistant to CIA director, Allen Dulles, then bankrolled by them to owning several newspapers, which led him into the on air media, and President Obama's mother last employer of record was Development Alternatives, Inc., a CIA-front company. [BTW, Zoe2000, you ARE aware of who finances her program, aren't you?!?!]
