Its kind of a darker Japanese version of Party Monster.

This story still has me guessing: is Kanako who she says she is or nah? Is it someone's dream of the dual nature of the self, imagining who Kanako really is? I kind of like this tease, especially from a movie. This turned out to be one hell of a movie, but it's tough and unrelenting in its evil. The Japanese have a tendency to keep evil things, well, evil. Watch at your own's worth it.

Harumph. I'm so tired of "the teen with the sordid secret life." He, she or they are sure to turn up in half the crime movies or TV programs made in the last 20 years. I could say that Kanako is the sordid teen to end all sordid teens, but unfortunately it would not be true. But what about the film? Its theme is the fetishization of children, particularly school girls, and scenes of them tossing their hair, teasing, giggling, partying and taking pictures drag on. In the second hour the pace picks up, and the film shows signs of becoming a snappy if extremely violent crime drama. There is a samurai-like gun, knife, and car duel that makes the film worth seeing. But Old Boy this isn't. Despite more exposition than a Harry Potter film, parts of the story remain unexplained. This movie needs a better translation, or an editor. Something.

This is NOT a movie for faint of heart. It's brutally violent, psychologically twisted to the nth degree, and strangely compelling. Couldn't stop watching but sorta wished I had. All I can add to this is it can't be un-watched.
