When Samuel, a lonely linguistics lecturer, wakes up on New Year's Day, he doesn't expect much from the coming year. When a stray, brindle-furred cat slips into his Barcelona apartment, it becomes the catalyst that leads Samuel from the comforts of his favorite books, foreign films, and classical music to places he's never been and to people he might never have met. Even better, he is led back to the mysterious Gabriela, whom he thought he'd lost long before, and discovers sometimes love is hiding in the smallest characters.

"For my money" the cat was the best character.

I was utterly charmed by this quirky little love story. Perfect if you liked "The Rosie Project" or "Soft in the Head."

Super silly. Super fun. I love Samuel and his efforts to get out of his rut.

This is a story of quiet revelations, the kind of life-changing events that have a huge impact on an individual but would likely never make it into a biography. Samuel is a professor of linguistics who has little human contact outside of his classroom lectures.

One day a cat appears, a mischievous cat, a cat who leads Samuel to places he's never been. The upstairs neighbor's apartment, for instance. And the vet. Samuel meets new people, he encounters a long-lost childhood crush, his life expands. He accomplishes the monumental human task of overcoming loneliness.

A couple of places, the language choices seemed a little odd to me, which I chalked up to this being a translation.

Interesting, thought provoking, quirky short novel.

Is it better to be 'with' someone or 'without' someone? Samuel is about to find out. And it all begins with a cat.
