A thrilling and original coming-of- age novel about a young man practicing magic in the real world. Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory.

An interesting book with some clever twists. It is surprisingly skimpy on the magic despite the title and premise, and it is at times overbearingly nihilistic. I kept waiting for the plot to develop into some purpose or direction, but even when the "quest" came along, it seemed like the characters didn't really care about it and were disappointed by it. It basically asks the question, what if the Narnia books were real, and a group of nihilistic 20-somethings decided to pay it a visit...

I thought this was more of an anti-fantasy than a fantasy, with immature, self-centered characters that I wouldn't want to know in real life.
