Detective Amaia Salazar leads an investigation of the murder of two young women which takes her back to her village in the middle of Basque country where secrets, myths and superstitions await.

I enjoyed the Spanish backdrop. I agree that the ending (conclusion) was too quick, too tidy, thus being a little disappointing. I enjoyed reading this novel from a female perspective, as the Inspector was female. It is the first novel in a trilogy - I might read the other two later on. It was a pick for my book club! There is a DVD in the works!

I picked up the 3rd book in the trilogy at random. I have looked for any comments on any of her books and this is the only place I have found some. I agree with the comments here - might appeal to some but to me it was too 'dark' and quite confusing. I have not finished it nor will I read the others in the trilogy. Despite this the write has an interesting style and I only wish the subject had been more appealing.

Full disclosure, I'm easily queasy with dark murder thrillers. So perhaps I picked the wrong book for me...but I thought it would be an enjoyable read given its International Bestseller status.

That turned out not to be true. While compelling & absorbing, the book's dark material had me skimming paragraphs so as not to disturb my lunch. And while that isn't the entire book, I also found that it veered off into unnecessary explanations and plot line detours. There is murder, family relationships, trauma, relationship history, magical elements, folklore, work relationships...all wrapped into one.

I did like the author's writing style & the Spanish backdrop. And people really into this type of genre may enjoy it, but I am not motivated to read Book No. 2 in the series.

It's not a rich book, I didn't find any remarkable facts in any of the characters, the story is addressed in a very childish way by the characters. And the end they give it to you in one paragraph, which honestly it's disappointing, since all the thrill is lost in one single paragraph. the only 2 fiction facts in the book are so empty and lack of imagination. I would not recommend this book
