Beautiful and brilliant, Kendra Donovan is a rising star at the FBI. Yet her path to professional success hits a speed bump during a disastrous raid where half her team is murdered, a mole in the FBI is uncovered and she herself is severely wounded. As soon as she recovers, she goes rogue and travels to England to assassinate the man responsible for the deaths of her teammates. While fleeing from an unexpected assassin herself, Kendra escapes into a stairwell that promises sanctuary but when she stumbles out again, she is in the same place - Aldrich Castle - but in a different time: 1815, to be exact. Mistaken for a lady's maid hired to help with weekend guests, Kendra is forced to quickly adapt to the time period until she can figure out how she got there; and, more importantly, how to get back home. However, after the body of a young girl is found on the extensive grounds of the county estate, she starts to feel there's some purpose to her bizarre circumstances. Stripped of her twenty-first century tools, Kendra must use her wits alone in order to unmask a cunning madman. ̃Book jacket.

This book had an intriguing premise (FBI agent in the present day accidentally travels back to the 1800s and ends up on the hunt for a serial killer) and some entertaining moments, but the execution left something to be desired. My main reservation was the improbability of a group of 19th century aristocrats reacting to the main character's presence and behaviour in the way that they did (ex. letting a kitchen maid of dubious origin spearhead a murder investigation).

Very fun read. This book got me on its combo of detective mystery, time travel, romance, witty dialogue, multi-dimensional characters, and well written plot. I have been stressed from work lately, so reading a book that can get me to pay attention, laugh, and empathize with the characters was a life saver. Highly recommend.

I enjoyed it & will read the author's next book, too.

This is an ok time travel novel - I agree with the commenter who declared it a beach read. I found the heroine somewhat ingenuous, even though she's supposed to be very smart. The historical details were not done very well, the writing was pedestrian, and there seemed to be a certain depth lacking in a book this long. Devoted fans of Regency might want to skip.

This is a good beach read. There is not much depth and only limited character development. Basically its a who-done-it with a 19th century backdrop

MURDER IN TIME by Julie McElwain
It's a lot like a regency romance, but with murder mystery entwined. The story flows smoothly, has several layers, and is blessedly free of the canned phrases that are so plentiful in the quickly written cheaply printed "dime store novels." My only complaint was when Kendra missed a slip that should have told her immediately who the killer was. I really enjoyed it, couldn't put it down toward the end, and will be looking for the next one.

This is time travel with a good mystery and capable, likable heroine who puts her skills and training to good use in spite of the difficult circumstances she faces. While at first glance comparisons to Outlander may seem apt, I thought A Murder in Time emphasized time travel and crime solving more with a bit of romantic attraction on the side. It was much more my cup of tea. (Full disclosure: I read only the first book in the Outlander series because I was disappointed when time travel swiftly took a backseat to romance.)

I picked this book up because it is the Big Library Read June/July 2016. I don't normally read this kind of thing, but I loved it! The main character is likeable and relatable, and the plot gets you addicted. Highly recommend it.
