New vampire Merit has been assigned the job of protecting Gabriel Keene, the alpha shapeshifter who has come to Chicago for a meeting with other shapeshifters. Unfortunately for Merit, someone is trying to kill Keene and she needs to figure out who it is before both of them are brought down by the assassin.
I love the Chicagoland Vampire series and this book did not disappoint at all. I love the chemistry between Merit and Ethan. Looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

i love this book it is like my favorite book ever.
I too disagree with the comment made by Ahance. In fact, it's what spurred me to read the rest of the books - the series does not remain predictable and safe. This book was interesting, not the best, but does provide more character development for Merit. The pointless on / off non relationships are a bit frustrating, but realistic in that they also happen in real life, so believable in that way.
I have to strongly disagree with the recommendation to not read this fantastic series. I have read all of the books including the latest "Drink Deep" and although "Hard Bitten" is thought provoking, book 5 in the series continues to develop the main character Merit and build upon and explain the storyline from book 4. It is my second favourite book in the series after "Twice Bitten". For fans of this series, please read "Drink Deep" when it becomes available for borrowing, or do what I did and buy the book. Can't wait for the next installment.
This is part of a great series, right up until Hard Bitten. If you have not started this series, be advised...DON'T!! The ending is not worth it. I won't give away spoliers I will just tell you that you will be disappointed and upset...
