Nick Mason is out of prison. After five years inside, he has just been given the one thing a man facing 25-to-life never gets, a second chance. But it comes at a terrible price. Nick Mason is out of prison, but he's not free. Whenever his cell phone rings, day or night, he must answer it and follow whatever order he is given. It's the deal he made with Darius Cole, a criminal kingpin serving a double-life term who still runs an empire from his prison cell. Forced to commit increasingly more dangerous crimes, hunted by the relentless detective who put him behind bars, and desperate to go straight and rebuild his life with his daughter and ex-wife, Nick will ultimately have to risk everything--his family, his sanity, and even his life--to finally break free.

Readable enough.... I finished it.... but it's so formulized, stock popular fiction the entire book could arguably be labelled a cliche [taken to great lengths]

Hard to believe this is from the author of The Lock Artist. (And it may not be. All of these guys are seeing their names as "brands" and hiring ghostwriters.) Illogical at every turn, not very well written, cardboard characters. The opposite of what Hamilton usually does (and making me suspect the longer I think about it that this is ghostwritten. If not that, speedwritten and published as first draft.)

Interesting premise and moves along at a good pace. I would read the next one if this is a series. However, it reminds me of a YA book (no surprise), I just hope the next one fleshes out the characters a little more.

Rumours abound that this intriguing novel is a series debut; fans of brooding anti-heroes are likely to hope the rumors are true. Imprisoned for a crime he didn't actually commit, Nick Mason has accepted a dubious offer: get out 20 years early and live a life of comfort...if he agrees to follow the orders of an incarcerated criminal without question. As the demands placed on him get ever more unconscionable, and more dangerous, Nick is increasingly ready to go straight. But of course it's not that easy. Set in Chicago, this novel "moves like a bullet train," with "gin-clear prose that all but sucker punches the reader" (Booklist).

I am such a sucker for these crime novels. I found out about this book at a public librarian conference. Great characters, great storyline, really fast-paced. If you're looking for a really great story that'll take your mind off of the rest the world for just a few hours, check out this fantastic piece of crime fiction.

Hamilton, who wrote the highly recommended LOCK ARTIST, returns with a new series starring Nick Mason, a small-time crook from Chicago’s South Side. Locked up for his involvement in a police shooting, Nick finds himself set free after five years due to a technicality. But his freedom - and his new second life - comes at a price. Nick has an ex-wife he still has feelings for and a daughter who’s all but forgotten him, and of course the police have long memories. Hamilton gives us a tale of rising stakes and smart action with enough character beats to keep even the most jaded thriller readers happy.
