Newbery Honor Book Turtle in Paradise is beloved by readers, and now they can return to this wonderful world through the eyes of Turtle's cousin Beans. Grown-ups lie. That's one truth Beans knows for sure. He and his gang know how to spot a whopper a mile away, because they are the savviest bunch of barefoot conchs (that means "locals") in all of Key West. Not that Beans really minds; it's 1934, the middle of the Great Depression. With no jobs on the island, and no money anywhere, who can really blame the grown-ups for telling a few tales? Besides, Beans isn't anyone's fool. In fact, he has plans. Big plans. And the consequences might surprise even Beans himself. Praise: "As a storyteller, Holm is superb."? School Library Journal "Holm impressively wraps pathos with comedy."? Booklist "Anyone interested in learning to write crowd-pleasing historical fiction for elementary school readers would be wise to study Holm's work."? Publishers Weekly , starred review "Sweet, funny and superb."? Kirkus Reviews , Starred Review From the Hardcover edition.

Ten-year-old ‘Beans’ Curry is an enterprising boy growing up in failing Key West, FL, during the Great Depression in the 1930s. His schemes for earning money have unexpected consequences. Then, New Dealers arrive in town with big plans to make sleepy Key West a tourist destination.

It’s fun to read about a boy’s life in another time. Great that Holm so seamlessly tells of the culture and history of Key West while telling this fast-paced story of Beans, his family and friends. I’m a grown-up but have visited Key West many times. Recommended.

This is a historical fiction novel set in Key West during the Depression. It's an interesting and very entertaining book for young readers or anyone wanting to know more about how Key West became a tourist destination!

Delightful account of Depression-era Key West, Florida from the kids' perspective. The author shared a piece of our country's history that I was not aware of. Highly recommend.

A humorous read-a-loud for grade 3-4. Beans sure does get into some predicaments all during a time period when there is no technology to entertain the kids. It's playing with one another in their yard and in the street-- location, one of my favourite places, Key West, Florida.

From the author of the Babymouse series, Holm tells the story of the Key West Florida during the Great Depression. Beans, the hero of the story has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders while his dad is away looking for work. He and his friends have many funny adventures while turning their town around for the better. Her research was excellent and she referenced Hemingway. Great read for Grades 4 to 6.

Holm excels at painting a vivid picture of a particular time and place -- Depression-era Key West -- that is detailed enough to feel fully realized, without getting too bogged down in the historical context of the Depression and the New Deal (which would likely turn off a lot of young readers). As a native South Floridian, I loved reading -- in a kids' book, of all things -- about a piece of my state's history I knew nothing about, plus this is just chock-full of memorable characters, humor, and heart. I highly recommend.

During the Depression, Beans Curry comes up with a lot of plans for making some extra cash to help out his struggling family. Some work out better than others, but his heart is always in the right place. Grades 3-5.
