The rhythms of this novel are the rhythms of the land. A Place on Earth resonates with variations played on themes of change; looping transitions from war into peace, winter into spring, browning flood destruction into greening fields, absence into presence, lost into found.

This was a great pleasure to read. The writing is wonderful and the characters are fully developed; it's a portrait of a community and its interconnected members. The pace is slow -- readers who want a fast moving plot will not take to this book. But I loved it. Some of it is funny, but some of it is heartbreakingly sad.
