Enjoyed this one. An easy read..kept you guessing as to outcome of characters. Yes, some parts predictable but still enjoyable.

Ten years ago, Shelby walked away from an accident that put her best friend in a coma. She can’t seem to move on and grow up and have a life - something that Helene will never have.

Alice Hoffman tells the story of guilt ridden Shelby Richmond in the novel "Faithful." It was so powerful it just about broke my heart. Shelby is driving when the car skids. She is alive but her best friend Helene becomes a vegetable and lies lifeless in a coma. Shelby blames herself. Her life is turned inside out. From a successful student she becomes a loser. She has to find her way in life again. She does so with the help of her loving mother and an unknown angel. She learns that love is the only thing that matters. She believes everybody should have ESP so that everyone will know what everyone else is thinking and maybe people wouldn't hurt each other so much. She finds a best friend with three children she finds dogs who need her. Will she find true love?

I am a huge fan of Alice Hoffman's work but this novel left me wanting. It felt a bit predictable (something I have never said about any of her books!) and the main character hard to cheer for. A good enough read but not what I have come to expect from this incredibly gifted storyteller.

I really had to push myself on the first 20 pages or so of this book -- the protagonist is at her lowest emotional point at the beginning, and it was depressing to read. However, I kept reading, and I'm glad I did -- Faithful was a good read. I appreciated how the novel showed Shelby's gradual journey towards rebuilding her life (in spite of herself) over time after a tragic accident puts her best friend in a coma.

Shelby and her best friend are in a car accident and her friend dies. She blames herself and goes through years of guilt. She can never forgive herself and lives on the edge of society. She meets a guy and lives with him for years but is never really in love.
Someone is leaving her messages over the years and eventually she discovers it is a high school admirer who is looking out for her.
She eventually comes to terms with the friends death, reconnects with family, falls in love with highschool friend, starts her own dog business.

What happens when a life is turned inside out? When love is something so distant it may as well be a star in the sky? Faithful is the story of a survivor, filled with emotion--from dark suffering to true happiness--a moving portrait of a young woman finding her way in the modern world. A fan of Chinese food, dogs, bookstores, and men she should stay away from, Shelby has to fight her way back to her own future. In New York City she finds a circle of lost and found souls--including an angel who's been watching over her ever since that fateful icy night.

To me this book was a heart twister about the painful (and rewarding!) journey of re-discovering one's self, hope, love and happiness. Very well written and highly enjoyable leaving the reader with a soothing and uplifting feeling (even though it's out of my usual go-to genre)! It kept me wanting to know what happens next, all through the reading.

Alice Hoffman novels are quicksand for me. In Faithful the postcards, bread crumbs, leading us on.

The narrative of the story may be YA but the theme is universal - to love and be loved. Alice Hoffman developed a young character who was devastated by loss and tragedy looking for redemption. She expresses, through the main character, a mirror of how our outlook on life parallels our internal view of self. Shelby feels abandonment and loneliness like dogs and cats at an animal shelter. (She adopts/steals several). I feel the author intended for the reader to deepen our own understanding with relationship to self as we experience the events in Shelby's life.
