"In a small village at the foot of the Italian Dolomites, not far from Venice, the gardens of a deserted farmhouse have lain untouched for decades. But the new owner, anxious for renovations to begin, is summoned to the house when his workmen disturb a macabre grave ... Then a valuable signet ring is found nearby. It is the first clue to reignite an infamous cold case of kidnapping and disappearance involving one of Venice's oldest families. Brunetti works on cases in Venice, but is called in on this one because the only identification for the old body seems to be a distinctive signet ring from an old Venetian family. Brunetti goes to his father-in-law, who knows everything about Venetian "society" who tells him of the corruption of the family involved. The dead man is the older son, but the younger "ought" to inherit. When Brunetti solves the case, he is posed with a moral dilemma about what to do. This aspect is one of the things I love about Brunetti--he's a moral man, not just a cop.
