As a volunteer at the San Diego Zoo in California, Margaret has been making good use of her psychic ability to communicate with animals such as Zaran, a stubborn tigress who refuses to accept her cub. Late one night, just as she shuts Zaran's cage, Margaret feels a gun in her back. John Lassiter, a former CIA operative, is prepared to use force to ensure that she joins him on a mission to rescue his mentor, CIA agent Sean Patrick. Patrick has been captured by Stan Nicos, a sadistic criminal who once held Margaret captive and killed her friend Rosa. Lassiter intends to let Nicos, who covets Margaret's skills as an animal communicator, think that he's willing to trade her for Patrick while actually keeping her safe. Margaret, who doesn't trust Lassiter at first, has plans of her own. Johansen keeps the suspense high as Lassiter and Margaret work together to ensure Patrick's survival.

If this is representative of her work I won't be reading any more Iris Johansen novels. Poorly written, repetative, convoluted, boring dialouge and the antagonist is not an empathetic character, although she claims herself to be. I think we're supposed to feel that Margaret has been wronged and has had a tough life but she just comes off as a petualnt, whiny brat. Ms. Johansen needs to purchase a Thesaurus. How many times can you use the word drily? I finished reading the Green Mile by S. King and the library web site recommended this due to my choice of the Green Mile. What these two books have in common is beyond me, other than a charater in TGM claims a mouse whispered in his ear and Margaret is a more boring version of Doctor Dolittle. What I find odd about the description of the book is that it is called suspensul and a high octane thriller. The story isn't bad, the writing is.

It was slow going and hard to get into for this Iris fan for the first 3/4 of the book - VERY repetitious as has been remarked before but the last quarter had plenty of action and a few twists to keep her fans happy and coming back.

I hadn't read any of Johansen's work before and I obviously am reading them out of sequence but I really don't expect to go back to her work as I found it tedious reading. Pathetically predictable and lacking in any subtlety but perhaps I just found a bad example?

He said something low and venomous to that goon who let you get away and then stalked back out to his car.
